Call centre jobs

Working within a call centre is a unique task, because the customer service you will be providing is slightly different from working in a store environment. You will not be speaking to your customers face to face, and it can be difficult.

There are a lot of different types of call centres, and the work you do will vary from job to job. You may be working in customer service, dealing with everyday customer queries. Most call centres include some aspect of sales in customer service positions now, normally asking you to 'up sell' to the customer. This involves offering products the customer may be interested in, based on information you have gained from your conversation. Working in this environment is sometimes difficult because you will have service targets, but also sales targets. It can be difficult to handle the two.

Some call centres operate within a complaints department. These are rare, as most complaints are handled by customer services, but most companies will have a call centre to handle severe complaints that cannot be dealt with in customer service centres due to the time constraints they have on their calls. Working in these centres can be difficult because you are always dealing with problems, and it can be difficult to sort some of them out. There will be no aspect of sales in these centres, but a lot of time will be spent trying to adhere to targets geared towards customer satisfaction.

If you are working in a sales call centre, your targets are primarily focused on getting a certain amount of sales per day. Outbound call centres find this more difficult than inbound, because in an outbound centre you will be contacting people who have not registered a prior interest in the products. When you are dealing with queries in an inbound centre, you will be speaking to people who are already interested in the product you are selling and it will be your job to provide them with information. The work in these centres can be difficult, but if you have the skills available and enjoy talking to people, you will find it a job you like.
